Refer to z/OS Work observability for details about monitoring batch jobs, started tasks, address spaces and TSO users.

z/IRIS enriches Instana APM traces with tags that contain metadata about the mainframe system, processing, performance and resource consumption. Use the analysis Instana dashboard to search, filter or analyze mainframe traces. Refer to custom tags for a list of z/IRIS tags available in Instana traces.

service.name

z/OS Work traces set the service name to the subsystem identifier, which is derived from the value contained in the SMF record type 30 field SMF30SID (e.g. JES2, STC, OMVS, TSO).

endpoint.name

z/OS Work traces set the endpoint name to the job or session name, which is derived from the value contained in the SMF record type 30 field SMF30JBN.

Call names

Each span name includes:

  • jobname refers to the job or session name derived from SMF30JBN.

  • jobid refers to the JES assigned job ID derived from SMF30JNM.

START {jobname.jobid}

Custom tags identify the job and detail security and system information.

STEP {jobname.jobid}

If the completion code is equal to or exceeds x'0004' then an error message is propagated, the call is marked as erroneous and a warning event is triggered for the purpose of providing further visibility. Moreover, if the completion code is equal to or exceeds x’0008' then an error event is triggered instead of a warning event.

Custom tags provide job identification values, security and system information, resource consumption and performance information for this step.

INTERVAL {jobname.jobid}

Custom tags provide total resource consumption (CPU, zIIP and service units) from the end of the previous interval until the end of the current interval. If the work unit started after the end of the previous interval, then this SMF record details resource consumption from the start of the work unit until the end of this job interval.

END {jobname.jobid}

If the completion code is equal to or exceeds x'0004' then a error message is propagated, the call is marked as erroneous and a warning event is triggered for the purpose of providing further visibility. Moreover, when the completion code is at least x’0008', then an error event is triggered instead of a warning event.

Custom tags provide job identification values, security and system information, resource consumption and performance information for this unit of work.

Regularly run jobs and started tasks can be grouped together and then drilled down to individual job instances using the Analyze Instana Dashboard.

Error messages

A detailed error message enriched with any additional information provided by the system is propagated for Instana warning and critical events or calls that are marked as erroneous for the purpose of providing further visibility. Depending on the completion code of a z/OS step respectively job or work unit termination an associated error level is used as prefix for the error message:

Prefix

Completion code

WARNING

>= X'0004' and < X’0008'

ERROR

>= X’0008' and < X’000C'

SEVERE ERROR

>= X’000C'

SYSTEM ABEND

X’Snnn' (X’0nnn')

USER ABEND

X’Unnn' (X’8nnn')

Instana warning and critical events

z/OS step respectively job or work unit termination with a completion code of at least x'0004' and less than x’0008' will trigger a warning event with a propagated error message in order to provide further visibility. Moreover, a critical event instead of a warning event will be triggered for completion codes of at least x’0008' in the Instana UI.

Erroneous calls

Calls are marked as erroneous when the completion code for the step or job is at least X'0004'. In order to provide further visibility a detailed error message is propagated to marked calls.
